Dear Friends,
in the past there has been rumours about a new project of mine. Today I am sure I will do it and now it’s not a rumour anymore: with today I started a new project called NIGHTGAUNTS.
NIGHTGAUNTS is a project which may be considered ambient – dark tunes, atmosphere or wiccan drums and dancing ghosts. This is NIGHTGAUNTS.
If you would know me in private, you would know that I am not one of those guys who are starting with a website before starting with the music. Well, actually there is NIGHTGAUNTS music! The first project to be released is the music soundtrack of an radio play. Of course, this radio play is a story of H. P. Lovecraft and I am very proud that I have been asked for doing that music.
When the project has been announced by the label, I will be able to provide you some selected scenes of the latest nightmares.
Yours sincerly, Cy Ghul

Dear Friends, living or dead,
it has been done! Finally CULTES DES GOULES debut THE HOUSE AT THE WATER is out when the night falls this evening! The first fellow undead have allready received their package. If you still need it, check out the GHUL SHOP: http://www.ghul.org/index.php?p=shop.articles
In the last weeks people told me that CULTES DES GOULES is extraordinary. Some told me it’s shit, cause metal has to be played with guitars. Some just said “production is shit and everything else too”. Well – please have in mind that CULTES DES GOULES is not a 100% metal band. It’s a mix between DEATH ROCK and a HORROR METAL (and the latter one isn’t an official name for anything). Together with the lyrics of LOVECRAFT, POE and others, you’ll sure have an extaordinary thing, but no easy listening.
You may want to have (or spread around ) a full preview of the album, here you go: http://www.lastfm.de/music/Cultes+Des+Goules/The+House+At+The+Water
Or download some MP3s here: http://www.cultesdesgoules.org
Or check out MySpace, of course: http://www.myspace.com/goules
The release comes as a CD-R with full coloured and professionally printed 4 page booklet. It’s beeing hold in a slim case and has a simple sticker on it. As you may have noticed, it is not released as a printed CD but a burned CD-R.
I also would appreciate it, if you would support underground music and could forward this! Thanks!
Yours sincerely! Cy Ghul

Well, can’t say that nobody has told me that magazines these days are not very open for the underground. I wrote a blog article about that this months. What happens, if a guy, who thinks BARATHRUM is boring crap, reviews CULTES DES GOULES? Not even the same, since BARATHRUM usually got a very good production.
In the opinion of Ray, who is writing for heavyhardes.de, SLAYER, METALLICA and IMMORTAL are 3 of the best metal bands ever. These bands had their good times actually. The list continues and everybody who reads the ROCK HARD magazine knows everything about tha bands. No underground here.
Fact is, everything which is not depending on taste, is wrong. Actually it seems that he was to lazy to open the booklet. With sarcastic letters he told me that:
- CULTES DES GOULES was a gothic band before (it NEVER was) - the the closing song ALICE is named “ABOUT ALICE” (what a crap, why does this guy think the song is called like this? Open the booklet!) - that ALICE is one of my songs (it’s a cover song unfortunatly – you can read this in the booklet too) - GHUL Productions is newly found (actually its POSSESSED RECORDS as you can read everywhere, it’s just renamed since I am only doing CD-Rs)
Well, thanks guy. Don’t believe how to gt 4 errors in just 3 paragraphs? Read it here.
Of course Ray doesn’t like the use of basses instead of guitars. It sounded like he was doing something in the kitchen while the boring shit was playing. Of course he didn’t mention the Beethoven arrangement. Of course there was not a single tune he liked, since there was no atmosphere in the whole composition. And yes, the bad production (which I actually made on my own studios and IS not perfect or even good) is destroying everything else. And I forgot, the keyboard sounds are cheap. I have no keyboards and the sounds are not really cheap, but I forgive him that, he really cannot know.
OK thats it. My article about how badly rechecked this review is, is actually longer than the actual review. Well, now I know that innovation is evil. Ray doesn’t want innovation. And I have to pay 10.000 euro at a minimum for the coolest production I can have. Ray need a clear production. And Ray needs a german booklet, since it seems that he isn’t able to read the english one.
Heavyhardes.de of course will not get any promo cd again. Otherwise I am afraid to bore them to death. In fact I really worry about sending out promos in general. I guess the other reviews will stay the same. And why should you guys read those reviews when you can listen to CULTES DES GOULES ON LAST.FM for free?

Dear Friends,
I added two reviews of MONDBLUT:
MONDBLUT – Angsterfülltes Morgen It’s weird. Even on a sunny day you start to shut out the sun from your room. Everything what has meant fun to you fades out and you suddenly are in the world of MONDBLUT. But first things first. I really thought long time this one is a Black Metal CD, but it isn’t. MONDBLUT plays some kind of electronic music with extraordinary sounds and very excellent compositions. When a song starts a flow of music begins and you cannot stop or skip the song. It’s like a river of darkness. MORE…
MONDBLUT – Scorn Nothing has changed at first glance. Several very weird sound introduce the CD and the same dark feeling comes back. Slow rythms start and dark melodies lead you to another world. However, the compositions are as nearly as good as on ANGSTERFUELLTES MORGEN. SCORN brings everything back, but the suicidal atmosphere could not reach the one on the debut CD. This is nothing bad. It just means that SCORN is another CD than the debut is. MORE…
Enjoy! Cy Ghul

The last two years I observed the metal and deathrock scene again. As you may know, I had a break with doing so for several years. In 1998 lots of people screamed “commerce!” to several bands while I couldn’t see why.
But now, 10 years later, things have changed. It’s not me, who has changed. It’s the scene. That commerce-paranoia has become true, in my opinion. Meanwhile it seems there are two classes of heavy metal bands and fans, the rich and the poor. It really remembers me on the actual situation in germany and other capitalism driven nations. The poor get more poor, the rich make more money than ever.
See webzines. I sent out my own news (I consider myself a “poor” underground band with nearly no attention from the fans) to several zines, but none are printed. Not one or two – out of 40 mags NONE printed the news that my album gets released on halloween. But I could really read on ALL webzines that CRADLE OF FILTH does something new. Well, ok. CRADLE OF FILTH is more of interest than CULTES DES GOULES is, I really accept this. But how could this happen that there are NO webzines left which write about the local scene? Or a underground scene with unsigned bands? Or a scene which excludes the major labels? Really, I don’t want to read 100 times about METALLICAs DEATH MAGNET. I guess 10 times would be good. I also would like to know about other news. My point is, that every zine writes about the same. There is no support anymore for the poor bands.
I asked some friends of mine how they had climbed the step to be a rich band. The two musicians I asked sell more than 10.000 CDs of a release. They are no rock stars, but they live from their music. Both told me independently:
“Guy, if you want to be a rich band, you have to pay lots for designing your CD. Design is everything. It counts more than the music. At least even good band photos count more”.
I really believe this. Look at the rich bands: everything is welldesigned, starting from the website to the myspace site. The CD – wow, lots of efford goes into that design. The production is perfect. All errors beeing played are hidden behind a highly compressed production. All that stuff needs a lot of money. That’s in fact the reason why I call the rich bands “rich”. It’s cause they really need lots of money for all that design and production stuff.
A poor band cannot efford this all. They just can start poor: playing tons and millions of gigs everywhere. Meanwhile – you probably know that – you even don’t get money for the fuel of your car. You have to pay for that yourself. It’s the same as paying for artwork, just less. Some bands have no gigs and no artwork. They are the poorest. They play for fun and in my opinion, they have just some cool friends who buy their outputs.
These days, poorest bands seem to sell 20 CDs from their outputs. Poor bands, who play live, may sell 100 or 200. Rich bands on the other hand sell 5000 to 10000. It’s like another world. There are now grey colors anymore, just poor or rich.
There are exceptions of course. See black metal bands. They often sell 1000 pieces without playing live. Well, I don’t like those guys very much, but they have a scene. The scenes buys lots of scene artwork, without caring about design or sound. That scene likes atmosphere, lyrics or something else. What that scene likes can be done without much money.
Well. Labels which support poor bands are poor labels too. They are dying. Poor bands have to step back – CD-Rs are necessary (like tapes before 15 years). But again, poor bands have fun, when they don’t have the pressure to sell 200 of their releases. Rich bands are rich, but not necessary happy. They have label which tells them how the release must look like. What gigs must be played. How the CD must sound like to be sold successful. And so on. I really would ike to live from my music, but I never would accept that I play for a label. So I am glad to be poor and can do whatever I want.
Hell, local scene and underground is dying when there is no scene to support them. When there are no zines who support them. At least there are some outstanding individuals who have the spirit of metal left.
For example – read this website: vorfeed.net
No layout. But cool reviews.
Finally I am unsure what I wanted to express The poor and the rich has been disconnected. The drift away from each other and that never was good. There are two scenes in co-existence. Hopefully, there will be more fans for the poor scene again, otherwise it will die in its form.

For a few days I had the luck to get a brandnew Apple MacBook Air to my hands. The notebook is running with Mac OSX Leopard of course and iLife 08 is preinstalled. This in fact means that I got a copy of GarageBand 4.1.2 which I meanwhile tried out.
Normally I am working with OSX 10.4 means Tiger. I am composing ideas usually with GarageBand 3 and then, when the idea envolves, switch over to Logic Express 7.3 where I work out everything. GarageBand is a very useful tool to quickly record ideas when they come up and I cannot live without this. Well, actually I could, but my life is easier with GarageBand.
When I fired up the iLife08 Version of GarageBand 4.1.2 everything looks familiar. There were no surprises, never. At the start screen is a new button which invites you to create a “Magic Band” song or something like that. I really didn’t understand what this crap is. It’s a bit like a computer game without sense. Choose your style and you see a stage with several instruments on it. Click again and you have some fitting loops in your player. Well, don’t know why one should consider this useful. So, my choice is to ignore that “new feature”.
The first new feature I saw was that “arrangement” bar on top of my tracks. It makes it possible for me now to arrange several parts of my song and give it a name. Means: I mark a part of my song and name it “chorus” or “middle part” or whatever. Later I thought I can easily copy the whole part and drop it whereever I want. Well, not true. I just can move the whole collection around, but copy and paste is not possible. This makes the feature nice but doesn’t help in praxis. I really would like to copy past and then modify some parts. I hope that one improves. I read later that apple states that this feature works with copy and paste, but at least I couldn’t figure out how. That’s not what I expect from my Mac!
One cool new stuff is the extension of the automation features. Similar to old garageband where you could draw your panning and your volume for each track, you are now able to draw EQ and echoes too. Thats a very nice one, I like it! I really could use a feature where I can connect my own automation tools, but I guess this will stay future.
Multi-Take recording. Well THIS one is really great and is a feature I really have missed in Logic Express. But since I record all my instruments in Logic Express and just do some demo voices in GarageBand I will not buy Garageband 4.1.2 only cause of that.
Visual EQ. OK, nice to have. But again, I didn’t miss that since I have own plugins for the job or use Logic Express. However, it’s comfortable and useful. But not the feature that gives you the urgent need to upgrade.
Sooooo… OK. What’s new also? You have the chance to burn a CD directly out of GarageBand. Well, I couldn’t do this since MacBook Air doesn’t have any CD-R drives or burning utilities. I guess It will work.
The LCD is a bit more comfortable. But nothing new here.
Instruments are strange. The laptop was preinstalled, but some of the instruments where missing. When clicking on the light grey instruments, GarageBand is telling me that it searches the instruments in the net and that I need 1,2 GB on space. What the heck? I didn’t try that out any further. If Apple really thinks I want to download 1.2 gig – no guys, are you kidding me? As I allready told you, I have no CD-Rom so a download is the only chance I have. Bah!
At least, I tried out if I can open a GarageBand 4 song with GarageBand 3 – it failed, of course. The import of a GarageBand 4 song into Logic Express 7.x fails too, of course.
Finally I am not very impressed by the new GarageBand version. If I would upgrade I get a multi-take feature and a nice arrangement tool, which doesn’t work at first glance. Automation is a bit cooler, yes. On the other hand my new GarageBand songs are not compatible with the products Logic Express 7 and not with older GarageBand versions. Means I would have to upgrade to Logic Express 8. And, hell, my Mac Mini which I use at the moment has not enough RAM memory for that version, so I would have to buy new Garageband, new Logic Express and a new Mac.
Really… not worth for me. I stay at Tiger with GarageBand 3 and Logic 7. These features are not enough. And if I would upgrade – I surely would leave GarageBand completly and use Logic 8 instead, since this has been enhanced visually a lot. So…. no go for GarageBand 4.

Dear friends,
recently i had a chat with Ashkan from the metal band AHOORA about the metal scene in their home country, Iran. It’s very interesting how things are going on when heavy metal is forbidden. Read this interview and you might found out why AHOORA is more metal than much of the western bands.
Read the full interview by clicking here.
Yours, Cy Ghul
